Disney Odds and Ends...

Just got back from a trip to Atlanta where the kids competed in the World LegoRobotics Championship. We then went on a family vacation to Orlando. While I still remember, I want to post a couple things about the Orlando trip that I'll want to remember in the future...

Height requirements and Disney rides...

Our 'LilDude measured at 43 5/8" before we left for Orlando. I inquired on several forums as to whether he'd be allowed to ride 44" minimum rides. Here's the answer...

We visited 4 Disney parks. I think he was only checked 3 times. Once at Expedition Everest in Animal Kingdom. And this was after he'd already ridden it and NOT been checked. And twice at Kali River Rapids in Animal Kingdom. The funny thing is that WE checked him at the Magic Kingdom and he overwhelmingly made it. In contrast, he was a lot closer (although clearly made it) at the measuring stations in Animal Kingdom. He was wearing the same shoes. In all cases, he was clearly above the measuring marker...and since he is clearly under 44" without shoes, this tells me that the measuring stations are pretty forgiving.

I rarely saw any children being checked at any park. Once, I saw a VERY small child get off Thunder Mountain Railroad ride, screaming, with the mom ranting about how it was too much for the child. The child was MUCH shorter than the minimum and hadn't been checked. In contrast, on another day, I did see a Disney worker pull one child (who was about an inch under the marker) from the Thunder Mt line. So it totally depends on who is in charge. But again, I rarely saw anyone get checked. And a lot of kids probably should have been pulled. I do wonder if they are more diligent during higher attendance weeks. Funny thing is that in our family, my 43 5/8" son enjoyed the 44" rides probably more than any of the rest of us!

Disney Lodging...
We were THRILLED with our accommodations. We stayed at Windsor Hills in a 3 bedroom, 2 bath condo and paid a little over $50 night. This required a Saturday to Saturday stay. I would not hesitate to do it again. We ate all meals there. (My kids were sick of pb sandwiches and taco salad by the end of the week!) Had 3 flat screen tvs with cable when we needed to veg at night. (Anakin said he'd like to live here--we have NO flat screen tvs or cable at home!) And enjoyed the pool (gorgeous!) whenever we could. Loved, loved, loved this option. If anyone wants a reference for a particular condo, I highly recommend the one we stayed in!

Cynthia, sounds like you guys had fun! When we went to Disneyland in CA we spiked Noah's hair up every day! He got on to most rides, but they wouldn't let him on to Space Mountain (he was a little relieved--he was acting tough, like he wanted to go on it, but when they said he couldn't, he smiled :). He went on Soaring Over California once (they didn't measure him), and then the next day when we tried to go on it, they wouldn't let him on (he cried--he loved that ride). ;) If we end up going to Florida again someday (we went when Isaac and Kaleb were 3 & 2 & we didn't have Noah yet), then I'll ask about your condo! $50 per night sounds AWESOME! We got a house that we split w/my parents for $800 for the week (crazy, huh!?), but I guess after splitting, it ended up being about $57 per night. It was a nice house, w/separate quarters for my parents and a private pool, etc. Nice...Kaleb asked yesterday if we can go to Florida someday. He doesn't remember going when he was 2. Maybe someday!! :) Glad you had a good trip!

Hi! I’m the Community Manager of Ruba.com. We’re building a website to highlight some of the most interesting places travelers around the world have discovered. We’ve read hundreds of blogs about Orlando and we think that this post is awesome! We’d love to highlight excerpts from your blog (assuming it’s OK with you of course) and to discuss other ways of tapping into your expertise if you are interested. I’m at erin[at]ruba.com.
Thanks! :)
